Code of Conduct

Statement of Function

The Code of Conduct is an agreement that balances the needs of individuals within the school group, and ensures that balance exists without undermining the core purpose and function of a safe school.

Sea to Sky Alternative School prioritizes safety, and honors the diversity of our students, families and communities we come from in our everyday actions. Conduct that undermines safety- real or perceived, in any form, will not be tolerated for any reason at our school.

We do not tolerate…

We honor and expect…

The Learning Environment: We don’t tolerate…

·       An individual’s conduct interfering with the responsibility of the teacher to teach and manage their classroom, and other students to learn in a safe and calm environment

We honor…

That all people have ‘off’ days, or ‘off’ classes. We expect that an unmet need or an unsolved problem may need to be addressed before trying out the classroom. Your teacher may refer you to an onsite support person to explore the issues and work on solutions with you

Disrespectful defiance: We don’t tolerate…

·       The use of profanity, confrontational, aggressive, provocative, or intimidating behavior between students, or between staff and students. This applies to on campus, online and in community conduct

We honor…

The right to respectfully disagree, and we expect to collaborate with you on solutions that work for you and the school group

Discriminatory conductWe don’t tolerate…

·       Any statements, publications, notices, signs, symbols, emblems or other representations that intend to marginalize or subordinate a person, group or class of persons to hatred or contempt because of the race, color, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age of that person or that group or class of persons.

We honor…

Change Agents of Social Justice. social justice change agent chooses courage over fear. They know they can't look around, hoping someone else will lead the change. They refuse to stand by and watch as the people they cherish are excluded and even harmed. They raise issues, and they stand up for diversity in all its forms. We expect students to learn, understand, and do the right thing

Vandalism:  We don’t tolerate…

·       The willful damage to personal, school, or private property as well as information technology systems.

We honor…

That students will do their best when they can. We expect students take responsibility for their actions, and make appropriate remedies for damages to school or personal property

Controlled Substances: We don’t tolerate…

·       Being in possession of, use of, or being under the influence of drugs and /or paraphernalia, or alcohol in and/or around school property.

We honor…

That some students may struggle with substances for a variety of reasons that are personal to them. Drugs and/or alcohol impact school for both the individual and the learning community in ways that can compromise the safety of the learning environment, and the lucidity (clear thinking) of your developing brain. Expect us to support you

Cell Phone Use: We don’t tolerate…

·       The use of cell phones or other electronic devices during class time.

We honor…

That sometimes situations come up that require your immediate attention. We expect that you would check in with your teacher, explain what is happening, and if necessary excuse yourself to make or take a call, and come back as soon as you can. We want to nourish a learning environment that maximizes focus, engagement and collaboration. The classroom is a place with a specific function, and your expression of readiness is that your phone is away and off to minimize distractions for you and your classmates.

Weapons: We don’t tolerate…

·       The possession of weapons, including replicas, and the use of anything as a weapon.

We honor…

That a weapon could be anything. Some people think that some weapons are cool or interesting. If you brought a weapon to school, on purpose or by accident, we expect you to declare and surrender it to school staff. We will hold onto it, and depending on the circumstances, return it to you when it is safe and appropriate to do so

School Attendance: We don’t tolerate…

·       Truancy or excessive tardiness.

We honor…

Occasionally we are all late for school. Arriving late means you are missing valuable information, and it can be disruptive to walk into a class late. When it becomes a pattern or a regular feature, we expect to discuss time management together, and work to build that skill. In the meantime, you will need to wait for your teacher to come in after class starts
